Brief History OF “IST”

Since the early 1970s, when some of us moved to East York, the only borough of Canada, the Muslim Population has grown steadily but substantially. The unique location of Thorncliffe Park & Flemigdon Park, offers many alluring features in which to live, work, and do business and such as a result of which today some 25,000 Sunni Muslim families living in East York. This makes the Muslim population as one of the most density populated in any city within grater Toronto and one of the fastest growing North American Muslim community.

We have been renting various facilities for our daily and Friday prayers, Taraweeh in the month of Ramadan as well as our evening after school program for our children. This lack of our own Place of Worship, religious education and a center from where all the social as well as religious needs can be fulfilled was causing tremendous difficulties and quite honestly was reaching to an alarming level in keeping Islam in the Muslims of today and Muslims of tomorrow.

In addition to safe guarding Islam in the Muslims of today and tomorrow, we have strong opportunities to propagate Islam in non Muslims as well as to defend Islam from those who occasionally but systematically try to discredit and spread hatred against Islam and Muslims.

Alhamdolillah, by the grace of Almighty Allah (SWT), in 1995 Muslims of East York purchased 4 Thorncliffe Park property suitable for a Islamic Centre and religious education as well as a center which can provide a place for preaching and teaching of Islam to Muslims and non Muslims in the community.

Profile of Organization:  The Muslim Population in East York, has grown steadily since 1970 when the influx of Muslim immigration began. The unique location of Thorncliffe Park Drive offers many alluring features in which one could live, work and do business, and as a result of this today some 40,000 Muslims living within a 10 km. radius of Thornecliffe Park.

Current property was purchased in 1995 and since then yet the Muslim population keeps growing.  IST boasts its presence among passionate brother and sisters of Islam. Serving tirelessly to accommodate and quench the competing thirst of Imaan and Yaqeen (Faith and Trust). Our community holds more than 3000 people during back to back Jum’ah (Friday) prayers and counts more than 6000 people on EID.

Alhamdulillah, Islam predominates in our small community and is widely practiced. The current space is large enough for daily congregational prayers but during Jum’ah (Friday), Ramadan and Eid most people pray outside on the ground. Students are on waiting list for Evening religious classes. IST needs bigger and better place to cater the needs of the community such as prayer area, Gymnasium for youth, community hall, more class rooms for religious education and after school programs. Religious education (Madrasah) for children that will cater subjects such as Holy Quraan, Tarbiyyah (Characters and Manners), Arabic language, Fiqh, Aqaaid, Akhlaq, Seerah (Islamic History) and many more.

EXPANSION PROJECT: In Feb. 2018,  IST purchased a property in the Thorncliffe Park area (20 Overlea Blvd.) located very close to our current location, which will serve as an expansion to our current Prayer facility, Madrasah & School and will also serve as a new community Center for the growing Muslim population in the Thorncliffe Park, Flemington and St. Dennis area. This facility will also be providing youth in our community with a much needed sporting facility.

The community has outgrown its current facility and currently run programs 7 days a week, day and evening, however we still have an increasing demand for space, in the existing facility for congregants, School, Madrasah and basic Community needs.

The new facility is over 3.2 acres of land with a 66,377 sq. ft Building and 142 parking spaces was purchased for $11.3 Million Dollars.  Your Support and Duaas for this great cause is highly appreciated. Construction is ongoing at 20 Overlea Blvd.
